About the Project-
I was late jumping on The White Stripes bandwagon. But, when I heard "Doorbell" a few years back I became an instant fan. That raw, classic sound was so fresh to me. I went straight to iTunes and downloaded the whole album. It wasn't long before I owned everything they'd ever released.
What really got me was that I wanted to sample almost every song. But, I couldn't just shamelessly sample their whole catalog. Plus, I had just decided to move away from sampling and focus on writing original music. So, a remix project seemed like the thing to do, and the idea was born.
I started digging through my collection and fitting all the pieces together. My goal was to use only samples from The White Stripes and a cappellas from classic songs and my favorite emcees. And of course, I had to rap on one of the tracks myself, with my man Brian Jacobs on the hook.
So there it is, hip-hop fans, meet The White Stripes.
Fans of The White Stripes, meet hip-hop.

The White Stripes: White Stripes to Play Conan's Last "Late Night"
White Stripes to Play Conan's Last "Late Night"
Conan O'Brien and the White Stripes go back a long way. Like that time the tri-colored duo played "Late Night" for a whole week back in 2003. Or when the tall-haired host made a cameo in the trippy, Michel Gondry-directed "Denial Twist" video. Or when Jack and Meg played two songs in one show in 2007 to promote Icky Thump.
So with Conan leaving "Late Night" to replace comedy super-villain Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show", it makes perfect sense for the White Stripes to blitz the show's farewell episode. It will be the White Stripes' first live performance since summer 2007. As if you needed another reason to tune in February 20-- it's Conan's last episode, people! Conan is a genius.
Looking back at some of the old WS/Conan performances, a few things are clear: this band was on some seriously stratospheric level of cool back in 2003, this version of "Let's Build a Home" will blow your britches off, and they really need to put another record out soon. The world needs them.
No word yet on which song they'll play on the show-- I'm lobbying for "Ball and Biscuit" because it is amazing and will allow for maximum Jack spazz-age.
In other Conan news, fellow genius Norm Macdonald showed up on "Late Night" yesterday and killed.

Sources: White Stripes Heading To Warner Bros.
February 12, 2007, 11:10 AM ET
Todd Martens, L.A.
The White Stripes are close to inking a long-term, multi-million dollar deal with Warner Bros., sources have confirmed to Billboard.com. The group was previously aligned with the now-defunct V2 via frontman Jack White's Third Man imprint, which also was home to his successful side band, the Raconteurs.
The Stripes' manager declined comment on the deal; the band's publicist did not respond to a request for comment.
The Detroit-reared rock duo has sold 4.5 million albums in the United States to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its last release, 2005's "Get Behind Me Satan," has shifted 850,000 and debuted at a career-best No. 3 on The Billboard 200. |

The White Stripes: pre-order Aluminum on November 6th, 2006
i just got this in my e-mail from XL
| Quote: |
ALUMINIUM
ALUMINIUM is an album of avant garde orchestral recordings of music written by Jack White of The White Stripes. The project was conceived by the founder of XL Recordings, Richard Russell, who co-produced the album with the renowned composer and arranger Joby Talbot. It was recorded between August 2005 and February 2006 at Intimate Studios in Wapping (London), using a specially assembled orchestra comprising many of the UK's finest young classical musicians.
The album will be available exclusively through the Aluminium website as a numbered limited edition of 3,333 CDs and 999 LPs. The download format will not be limited, and will come with an electronic booklet. The album will be available for pre-order on November 6th, 2006.
Long time White Stripes collaborator, Rob Jones, created a series of 10 images to accompany the album. These images will be printed up as cards and packaged with both the CD and LP formats. In addition to this, the LP format will include a section of an original Rob Jones silk screen print.
The images are available to view on the Aluminium MySpace site, and as part of a wider Rob Jones exhibition which is currently showing at the Richard Goodall Gallery in Manchester.
On hearing Aluminium, choreographer Wayne McGregor included tracks from the album in a new piece that he is putting together for the Royal Ballet. The piece will be performed at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden this November.

AHHHH....
"Aluminium is an avant-garde orchestral interpretation of songs written by Jack White." I have no idea how to properly explain this art show/album, but I do know it's a pretty cool concept. You can hear some of the songs at the myspace page for Aluminim. Also you can read all the details of the show here. |

The White Stripes: White Stripes Win Lawsuit Over Royalties
the stripes actually made a news post about the lawsuit.

Studio owner loses lawsuit against White Stripes
Jury rejects claim to share copyright
June 16, 2006
BY BRIAN MCCOLLUM
FREE PRESS POP MUSIC WRITER
A jury ruled in favor of the White Stripes Thursday in a case that focused on the genesis of the modern Detroit rock sound.
The eight-person panel deliberated just 20 minutes before returning its verdict in Detroit federal court, rejecting claims by studio owner Jim Diamond that he deserved part ownership of copyrights for the band’s first two albums.
In addition to back royalties Diamond could have received with a favorable ruling, the case involved credit for the White Stripes' earliest music -- a signature sound closely linked to the internationally celebrated revival of Detroit rock.
In closing arguments Thursday morning, attorneys for the band acknowledged Diamond's technical skills as a recording engineer but equated his role with the White Stripes to that of a carpenter following an original blueprint.
"The White Stripes" and "De Stijl," recorded at Diamond's Ghetto Recorders studio in 1999 and 2000, sold nearly 600,000 total copies in the wake of the White Stripes' international breakout in 2001.
With Jack and Meg White looking on, Los Angeles attorney Bert Deixler told jurors that Diamond's assertion of copyright was akin to the claim-jumping of unscrupulous Old West miners. He argued that Diamond's work in the studio -- microphone placement, reverberation effects, mixing -- did not meet the standards necessary to claim co-authorship.
"None of that constitutes originating an original work or causing it to come into being," Deixler said Thursday in court.
Diamond's attorneys cited liner notes from the 1999 album "The White Stripes," in which the band voluntarily gave Diamond a co-producer credit. Stephen Wasinger told jurors it was his client's most persuasive evidence, from a time period "when credit was more important than money."
"Mr. Diamond at that time, in that place, was equally talented," he said during his closing argument.
Anthony Deluca, a Grosse Pointe attorney representing Diamond, said late Thursday that the case had presented unique difficulties.
"How do you explain to the average juror what was going on in the underground Detroit music scene in 1999 -- especially in the context of a complicated copyright case?" Deluca said. "Jim Diamond gave those bands life. It's a tragedy for Detroit, and for underground music, that the White Stripes won't acknowledge Jim Diamond's contributions to the evolution of the band."
At issue were so-called mechanical rights to the sound recordings of "The White Stripes" and "De Stijl." Rights to the White Stripes' compositions -- credited to Jack and Meg White -- were not in dispute.
Before sending jurors to deliberate Thursday, federal judge Avern Cohn patiently walked them through the basics of the notoriously complex field of copyright law, an area in which he'd earlier acknowledged a lack of experience.
But jurors apparently had little trouble navigating the case, delivering their decision far more quickly than many onlookers expected. Jack and Meg White were still eating lunch nearby in downtown Detroit when word came that the jury was returning to the courtroom.
